Paradox 9 vs Access 97

I need some help/advise. As I stated in my earlier post, I use Paradox 7 mostly for querying. I want to upgrade to version 9, however the braintrusts in our IT department have told me that Access is the company standard. I need a good reason, other than being more comfortable with Paradox, to choose it over Access.

The usual reason for promoting a company standard in tool selection is compatibility with the other workers. Is your data shared with other employees at your company? By shared, I don't mean just the informational content. I mean do others enter data, query, report against, maintain, modify? And, are your queries and anything else you design shared with other workers? Do you ever find yourself handing a QBE to someone else?

If you share data and techniques, you must hew to the corporate standard, and be satisfied with Access. The loss in productivity will not be very great, probably not enough to impact your performance reviews after the first couple of years.

If your data and the operations on it are private to you, then you should continue with the tools that you need to use. You cannot be accused of dragging your feet if you are in fact a little faster than everyone else. Also, you can tell the braintrusts that support will not be an issue, since you have us.

I just hope that these people know *why* they have a corporate standard in the first place.

One thing I simply cannot understand is, if these braintrusts had the example of your Paradox-7 work before them, how in God's Green Creation did they convince themselves that Access is the way to go?

If I was using Paradox-7 and was not allowed to change to anything but Access, I would certainly stick with Paradox-7 rather than make waves and possibly have it taken away.

One of my clients is Delphi-only, having had previous bad experiences with too many platforms in use at once. I use Paradox-7 as a database desktop there, but I don't advertise its presence to the client. It starts with a -q switch, and both icon and title say "Borland Data Desktop Professional".

My personal preference for Paradox grows mostly out of my experience with Microsoft products in general. Paradox was invented by Borland and is sold and fully supported by Corel, two companies in which I have unbending faith. Access is sold by the Devil, at his usual price.
